symptoms of heartburn

The symptoms of heartburn can be annoying, uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful. It is such a common condition that you probably assume it is just part of life that you have to live with. This is common thinking, yet can be quite dangerous, considering those symptoms could actually be your warning that something more serious is happening inside your body.

Heartburn is often described as a fire within the chest. This burning sensation may remain just in the upper chest area, or could travel up into the throat. In some cases, bitter acid may be tasted in the mouth as well. The most common time for these symptoms to occur is right after you eat a meal. This is because regular heartburn is a result of a tiny muscle at the end of your esophagus not shutting properly. When it relaxes or fails to snap shut quickly, your food or stomach acid is allowed to come back out and move backward through your system. It may also occur if you lean over, causing the muscle to open.

So, what are the symptoms that may tip you off to a more serious condition? For starters, if you do not have a history of heartburn and suddenly start experiencing it on a regular basis, you may want to visit your doctor. This is especially important if you have not changed your eating habits to something that may be upsetting your stomach.

If you experience a lot of chest pain with the heartburn you may want to see your doctor as well. This is especially true if the chest pain and burning sensation is happening even when you have an empty stomach.

Remember, symptoms of heartburn should go away rather quickly with an antacid. If it lingers or continually comes back right away, you may have a more serious condition to get checked out.  You can manage heartburn with the proper attention and not have to suffer needlessly.

Even if your heartburn is just a result of your eating habits of being overweight, it should not go untreated. Heartburn that occurs more than a couple times a week could actually lead to more damaging consequences in the future, so do not take it lightly.

If you pay attention to what you are eating right before you get heartburn, you may be able to diagnose the problem and fix it yourself. Carbonated beverages and certain foods are the most common culprit for most cases of heartburn.
