Many mums to be would like to listen to their baby’s heartbeat in the comfort of their own home, but are worried about the effect of the ultrasound waves on the foetus. But there is no reason to suspect that a home baby heart monitor poses any risk at all.
Hospitals limit the number of occasions and length of time they spend scanning an unborn baby incase there is a link with abnormalities. But this is purely precautionary. It is also worth pointing out that the strength of ultrasound waves hospitals use are far, far stronger than those emitted by any fetal doppler you can buy to use yourself.
The British Medical Ultrasound Society has studied the evidence and declared the home versions completely safe.
