You may assume that watching what you eat or starting a diet will drastically decrease your occurrences of heartburn, but there are some common diet foods that cause heartburn in many people. Dieting and losing weight will do great things for your overall health, but if you start to experience heartburn the culprit is likely to be some of those new foods you have started to consume.
Acidic foods are one of the top causes of heartburn. Fruits such as grapefruit and oranges are among the most acidic foods you could select, and they are common diet foods due to their wealth of vitamin C and low caloric content. Orange juice and other fruit juices fall within the same heartburn inducing category as the actual fruit. While you may want to occasionally enjoy a small glass of juice or a piece of fruit with a meal, you should not consume these foods on an empty stomach.
A typical diet food that you may need to watch is tomatoes. While water based vegetables like cucumbers are easier on the stomach, tomatoes are acidic and fall into the category of heartburn inducers. Pay attention when you eat salads to see if they could be causing at least part of your problem.
If you are enjoying steamed vegetables or stir fry as a healthier dinner alternative, consider what you are using for flavor. Onions and garlic are commonly used when sautéing or making stir fry, but they can lead to heartburn as well.
Remember that what you drink can have serious consequences in the stomach as well. Carbonated beverages are obvious culprits for heartburn problems, and that includes the “free” varieties that cut out all sugar and calories. They may be nicer on your waistline but they will not be gentle on your stomach.
Consider that caffeine is factor that may increase the burn. Drinking coffee or other liquid supplements with caffeine may be a way to increase your energy to power through workouts, but they are likely to power up your heartburn as well. Make sure to drink caffeineated beverages with non-acidic foods and reduce your consumption if it is an issue.
You don’t necessarily have to cut common foods that cause heartburn completely out of your diet. What affects one person harshly will do nothing at all to someone else. Pay attention to what you are eating just before your heartburn sets in and you will know which foods or beverages to cut back on.
